One Fu Over the Coo-Coo’s Nest!

One of my latest, favoritest projects: Fogey Fu! Adventure awaits at the iTunes store (search for “Fogey Fu”).

For the iPhone and iPod Touch.

This was a super fun project to work on, but it turned into a heckuvalota work–more than I expected. I designed the characters and animated their misc. fight moves in Flash, but then had to export all those assets as png sequences that the programmers had to reassemble for the game play.

I’m not even a gamer but I’ve been testing the beta and it’s a lot of fun to play. They’re selling it for .99 cents. They also put up a limited, free version but it’s not nearly as fun.

If anybody checks it out, let me know what you think.

tip 1: when the orderly throws bedpans and/or the doctor flings syringes at you, use the cane to block them. Keep spinning until they pass you–they didn’t program a “deflection” effect yet, so they just whiz past.

tip 2: strategy–when you get to the nurse station, if your health bar is kind of low, pick the pudding to restore it. If you’re good on health then load up on speed next (the hemorrhoid cream)…good for outrunning enemies when things get sticky.

Veggie Tales Just For Me (well, and you)

Wow, I almost forgot about this blog. This was pretty fun to do and might be of interest to whomever might trip over this crack in the internet’s sidewalk.

I recently completed work on a new iPhone app (for iPod Touch, too):

“Veggie Tales Just for You.”

Here are a couple of animations I did for this app.

This is the intro theme song:

The cool thing is that the program takes the name you pick from the database and then marries it with the rest of the animation while downloading the app. In this case “Cassie” but it can be anything from the database.

And this is a sequence that wound up not getting used, I think for lack of time. (Hopefully we’ll get it implemented in an update.):

So, the original assets were generated in a 3D program (I don’t actually know what they use at Big Idea) but I cut them up in Photoshop, making my usual “Mr. Potato Head” pieces and pulled them into Flash to create the sequences we needed for the game. A glitch in that production model is that Flash can’t be imported directly into the iPhone app. I had to export everything as a png sequence which the programmer reassembled in his authoring environment.
You can actually get the app at the iTunes store. Search for “Veggie Tales Just For Me.”

Being Lincoln — Men With Hats

Being Lincoln Intro Animation
Being Lincoln Intro Animation

This is an intro/title sequence I just finished for a documentary about Lincoln Presenters (they don’t like to be called impersonators.)

Being Lincoln

I approached the concept like a superhero origin story: a young man gradually discovers his destiny to be a Lincoln. The documentary is really pretty entertaining even if you’re not a Lincoln buff. You might learn some History, but it also has lot of humor–let’s face it, a hundred dudes dressed up like Lincoln is good for a chuckle.

UPDATE:

Being Lincoln Men with Hats has been making some festival rounds and has garnered some awards: it received the Audience Choice Award for Documentary at the Derby City Film Festival and also received the Best Tennessee Feature Film Award at the Secret City Film Festival. Congratulations to Victoria Radford and Elvis Wilson!

The DVD is also now available!

Flash Claymation

Clay animation in Flash

I’m going to post in more detail about this, but for now, here is a peek at a recent test. It’s not a substitute for full-blown, stop-animated claymation, but it’s got a lot of possibilities for ways to stretch what the typical Flash animation can look like.

Nashville Attack

I just stumbled over this old thing, a short, spoofy tribute we did for an old client’s retirement party.

What’s notable about it is that I did it in 2 days. (sync is off in the You Tube version but it’s not that important.)

Getting started

Bear with me as I work the kinks out of this system.

This is Oliver Nike (the little guy). I’ve been drawing him for a long time, but this might be the first time I animated him. When I was in highschool, my friend Philip liked the fish (he originally turned up in “fishing” situations when I was drawing caricatures at our local theme park). For some reason Philip wanted me to draw on his shoes, so I got my trusty sharpie marker out and covered his shoes with cartoon fish. Then somebody said, “look, it’s all over Nike”. Don’t ask me why that was so funny, but Oliver Nike was born that day.

Here is a swf version. Just curious how this appears.
